3. About the Senior Backend Engineer Role

247Bet is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to build and own the core systems that power its platform.

You will work on services handling real-money transactions and real-time activity, including the wallet, betting engine, live betting, settlement, copy-betting infrastructure and social features.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex backend problems and taking genuine ownership of production systems. Correctness, reliability and resilience are critical, particularly when financial transactions and betting outcomes are involved.

The backend stack is built primarily around C#/.NET and AWS, with an event-driven architecture using Kafka, PostgreSQL and Redis.

What makes this role technically interesting?

  • Building systems that process important financial and transactional events.
  • Managing asynchronous workflows and communicating between distributed services.
  • Designing APIs that support web and mobile experiences.
  • Handling retries, network failures and uncertain transaction outcomes safely.
  • Improving production reliability while continuing to ship useful features.

Engineering tip: If you have worked on payments, ledgers or other transaction-heavy systems, prepare a clear example of how you prevented duplicate processing or recovered safely from a failed operation.

4. Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will help build, operate and improve the backend services that support the platform.

  • Design, build and maintain backend services using C#/.NET 8+ across wallet, betting, settlement and social domains.
  • Build and maintain event-driven systems using Kafka and appropriate delivery and processing guarantees for transaction-critical workflows.
  • Design reliable systems with strong idempotency, retry handling and failure recovery, particularly for financial transactions.
  • Model, optimise and maintain data using PostgreSQL, with Redis for caching and real-time state.
  • Integrate with third-party providers, including odds and trading feeds, payment gateways, KYC and fraud-prevention platforms.
  • Write well-tested, observable and production-grade code.
  • Own backend services throughout development, deployment, monitoring and production support.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, design discussions, code reviews and incident response.
  • Build systems that remain reliable under real-world conditions, including unreliable networks, retries and uncertain transaction outcomes.
  • Collaborate with frontend and mobile engineers to design clean, efficient API contracts.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex production issues.
  • Mentor mid-level engineers and contribute to raising the overall engineering standard of the team.
CV tip: Don't simply list technologies. Describe the systems you built, the scale or complexity involved, the problems you solved and the measurable results. Use figures only when you can substantiate them.

5. Requirements and Qualifications

The employer is seeking an experienced engineer who can take responsibility for complex backend systems and help keep them reliable in production.

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with strong expertise in C#/.NET, ideally .NET 6+ or .NET 8+.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, API design, event-driven architecture and data modelling.
  • Hands-on production experience with PostgreSQL and Redis.
  • Experience with Kafka or an equivalent message broker.
  • Solid cloud experience, with AWS preferred.
  • Kubernetes/EKS experience is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience building systems where correctness and reliability are critical, such as payments, financial systems, ledgers, trading or other transaction-heavy platforms.
  • Strong understanding of testing practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience owning production systems and participating in incident response.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Clear communication and the ability to collaborate with Product, Frontend, Mobile and other Engineering teams.
  • Ability to balance engineering quality with the need to deliver and ship products.

How to assess your fit

Review the essential requirements honestly. If your background aligns with the core engineering responsibilities, make that connection clear in your CV. Give priority to relevant production experience rather than filling your application with unrelated tools and technologies.

Application tip: Tailor the first half of your CV to the role. Highlight relevant .NET experience, distributed systems, data stores, cloud infrastructure and production ownership where these reflect your actual experience.

6. Nice-to-Have Skills

The following experience could strengthen an application, although the employer lists these as additional advantages rather than the main requirements.

  • Experience in sports betting, gaming, fintech or other high-transaction-volume platforms.
  • Experience working with betting, payments or financial transaction systems.
  • Familiarity with Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) patterns for mobile and web applications.
  • Experience with observability tools such as Datadog, OpenTelemetry or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience building technology products for African markets, particularly Nigeria.
  • Experience with live betting, odds feeds, settlement systems or trading integrations.

If you do not have direct sports betting experience, consider whether your work in fintech, payments, e-commerce or other transaction-heavy environments demonstrates similar engineering skills.

Career tip: A missing nice-to-have skill does not automatically make you unsuitable. Focus on demonstrating strong fundamentals and explaining how your existing experience transfers to the employer's technical challenges.

7. What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means building backend systems that are reliable, scalable and correct under real-world conditions.

You will be expected to take meaningful ownership of production services, identify and resolve technical risks early, build resilient transaction flows and contribute to a stronger engineering culture across the team.

What that means in practice

  • Designing services that behave predictably when dependencies fail.
  • Preventing duplicate or inconsistent transaction processing.
  • Making failures visible through useful logs, metrics and traces.
  • Investigating incidents methodically and applying lasting fixes.
  • Helping teammates make sound technical decisions and maintain high standards.

This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys ownership, not just completing assigned tickets. The ability to explain trade-offs, investigate production behaviour and make systems more resilient will be particularly relevant.

Interview tip: Prepare two or three real engineering stories. Explain the problem, the options you considered, your decision, the trade-offs and what you learned. Clear reasoning is more persuasive than a long list of buzzwords.

8. CV Tips and Advice for Applicants

Applying for a senior engineering role takes more than having the right technologies on your CV. Your application should help the hiring team understand what you have built, how you think and what you can own.

1. Make your experience easy to find

Place your most relevant backend experience near the top. Include your years of experience, core technologies and the systems you have worked on, where accurate.

2. Show outcomes, not just responsibilities

Instead of saying you maintained APIs, explain what you improved, such as reliability, latency, test coverage or recovery time. Use credible metrics where available.

3. Prepare for system design questions

Review message processing, idempotency, database transactions, caching, consistency, retries, observability and failure recovery.

4. Keep your application professional

Use a readable CV, working contact details, clear dates and concise descriptions. Proofread the final document before sending it.

5. Follow up on your job search consistently

Track the jobs you apply for and the dates you submit applications. Continue applying for relevant openings instead of relying on a single opportunity.

A little encouragement: You do not need to meet every bonus criterion to present a strong application. Be honest about your experience, demonstrate your strengths and keep improving with every application and interview.
